At Baptist Health, maternity care prioritizes both mothers and their babies - our expertise and dedication have enabled us to safely and proudly deliver more babies annually than any other provider in Alabama. Each childbirth experience at Baptist Health is important to our caring and skilled staff, and our entire hospital adopts a family-centered philosophy regarding maternity services.

Throughout your pregnancy, during delivery, and in the postpartum period, you and your newborn will receive exceptional care. Some of the essential maternity care services we provide at Baptist Health include:

  • Childbirth classes
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Access to neonatal intensive care

OB Emergency Department

Baptist Medical Center East boasts the only OB Emergency Department in Central Alabama, featuring an OB/GYN physician available around the clock, every day of the year, thanks to our collaboration with OB Hospitalist Group.

Baptist Health and OB Hospitalist Group are united in their mission to enhance the quality of women’s healthcare, ensuring that every expectant mother receives evaluation and treatment from a physician, no matter the time, place, complication, or situation. These highly trained, board-certified OB/GYNs deliver consistent care to patients within the hospital and provide emergency assistance to those arriving in Labor and Delivery.

Pre-Delivery Support and Preparation at Baptist Health

Baptist Health provides childbirth classes led by skilled nurses, aimed at helping mothers get ready for a safe and healthy delivery. Additionally, we offer infant safety and CPR courses for new parents and grandparents, ensuring that you and your family feel confident as you welcome your new baby into your lives. We are also proud to have a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Specialist available for advanced care and high-risk pregnancies for those who meet the criteria.

Best in Class Delivery Support and Childbirth Care

During your delivery, you can look forward to a secure environment supported by a team of highly qualified nurses and doctors. Additionally, you will have access to specialized neonatal teams through our Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Both of our NICU facilities are fully equipped to care for the smallest arrivals, and our experienced NICU staff collaborates with parents to ensure they feel confident when it's time to head home. Parents of NICU infants have the option to "room in" with their babies before discharge, with nurses available nearby to address any questions.

Postpartum Resources at Baptist Health

At Baptist Health, we understand that the journey of maternity continues well beyond childbirth. Keeping this in mind, we provide comprehensive breastfeeding support for new mothers. To ensure that moms can breastfeed successfully, we offer assistance in various ways:

  • Classes
  • Newborn photography
  • Phone Support
  • Support groups
  • Weight checks for babies

Additionally, mothers can rent breast pumps from the Lactation Center at Baptist Medical Center East. Phone support, retail options, and outpatient breastfeeding assistance are accessible to all mothers, no matter where they gave birth.
