What About Sex?

Your doctor will probably advise you that it is fine to continue to have sex during pregnancy, as long as it is comfortable and desired. It is important that your sexual relationship remains as fulfilling as possible for you and your husband. It is generally agreed in most medical circles that sex throughout the greater part of pregnancy is acceptable and will not harm the fetus. The fetus is well protected in the uterus. However, some doctors may not feel it is advisable for you to have sex in the last weeks of your term. Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding this. If you have vaginal bleeding, pain or leakage of fluid at any time, notify your doctor immediately! Some women might experience uterine contractions during intercourse and although this might be frightening, it is usually not dangerous. How often to have sex varies from couple to couple. The mood which both of you are experiencing may have an effect on how you feel and on your desire for sex. Share those feelings.
