Warning Signs During Pregnancy

Your doctor needs your cooperation in order to give you and your developing baby the best possible medical care and supervision. While serious problems during pregnancy are not frequent, there are certain warning signs of which you should be aware and report to your doctor if they occur. Extreme nausea or persistent vomiting. Vaginal bleeding at any time during pregnancy in any amount. Severe and/or continuous headaches. Swelling or puffiness of hands, fingers and face. (It is not unusual for feet and ankles to swell some during the day, especially in hot weather, but this swelling is usually greatly reduced after a night of rest.) Blurred vision or spots before your eyes. Dizziness or fainting. Chills and fever over 100 F. Pain or a burning sensation with urination. Severe abdominal pain during any period of your pregnancy. Strong lower abdominal cramping that appears to come at regular intervals; especially if it occurs before the due date. A sudden gush of fluid or persistent trickle of fluid from the vagina. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate urine escaping from the bladder from pressure on it by the baby and fluid escaping from the vagina. If the trickle continues after you have emptied your bladder, it is significant to report. Absence of movement of the baby for a 24-hour period. As the baby grows, there is less room in the last months for him or her to tumble and turn, but you will continue to be aware of kicks and bumps under your ribs, against your abdominal wall or on the bladder.
