| The Cesarean Experience A caesarean delivery is a surgical method of delivery performed in the delivery area operating room. Thousands of babies each year are born by this method. Whether a woman is a candidate for caesarean-section (C-section) delivery is determined by her doctor. Sometimes, surgical delivery is necessary for women with certain medical risks. In other instances, complications may develop during pregnancy or labor that necessitate a C-section. This kind of delivery may be scheduled in advance or it may be an emergency procedure. Some women who have prepared for a vaginal delivery may experience disappointment upon learning that they may have to undergo a caesarean delivery. Although the two methods of delivery differ remarkably, they are both positive emotional birth experiences. The need for family-centered care, such as the opportunity to bond with the newborn, is just as great with both. Fathers are equally important in caesarean birth and we encourage you to accompany your wife in the operating room to provide emotional support. |
