| Preparing for your baby You have probably become much more aware of “baby things” since your doctor confirmed your pregnancy. Now is the time to begin stocking up on items you will need for your baby’s layette. The clothing needs of the baby are simple at first. If you plan to use cloth diapers, you can manage with three to four dozen diapers, waterproof pants and diaper pins. For disposable diapers, plan to use around 10 to 15 per day. Other items you will need include six cotton shirts (size 6 months) with long or short sleeves, depending on the season and house temperature; four to six receiving blankets; nightgowns; and other outfits you think are appropriate. A baby thermometer is a MUST! Here are some suggestions for bedding: If your baby’s bed is a crib, it should be sturdy. It should have a firm mattress and a mattress pad. You will also need about three crib sheets and two to three crib blankets for covers as needed for warmth. The distance between the slats of the sides of the crib should be small enough so as not to pose a safety threat to the infant. If your crib is an older one, make sure it conforms to current safety standards. If your baby’s first bed is a bassinet, you will need pillowcases to serve as sheets; several blankets for covers and a mattress (a folded pad can serve as a mattress). Other “musts” are for your baby’s bath. You will need a plastic tub or special bathing tub in which to bathe your baby. Have plenty of soft washcloths and towels on hand. You will also need mild soap, a bottle of lotion, cotton balls or swabs, a comb, and brush. Check with friends and relatives for baby furniture items. You may be able to borrow some pieces if your furniture budget is limited. |
