| Your Baby's Growth By the end of 24 weeks gestation, the fetus is 12-14 inches long and weighs about one-and-a-half pounds. His or her skin is red and wrinkled, but it is developing a protective covering called “vernix caseosa” which means “cheesy varnish”. The substance is a combination of epithelial cells and secretions from the oil glands which adhere to the skin. The eyes are now open and sensitive to light. The ears are sensitive to sounds. Skin ridges give the baby distinctive palm and foot prints. |
