Breastfeeding Your Preemie

Although it may not be possible to breastfeed newborn premature babies, mothers can still provide their preemie with breast milk by pumping. While in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), preemies can receive their mother's milk via a feeding tube. Here are some tips for breastfeeding your preemie:

Start pumping as soon as possible. A hospital-quality electric pump and a relaxing pumping routine will ease the process.

Establish and build your milk supply. During the first few days after birth, pump every couple hours.

Empty your breasts when pumping. This will ensure that the hind milk, which is highest in fat and provides the calories preemies need, is extracted.

Persist through the ups and downs. Your milk supply will vary. If your breasts seem unproductive, try getting more rest, drinking more water and pumping more frequently (rather than for longer sessions).

Breastfeeding takes practice and patience. Both baby and mother require time to figure out what works best. Consult a doctor or lactation consultant for guidance.
