December 2003 - Montgomery Family Medicine Residency Program has
earned full accreditation from the Accre
ditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME oversees the
quality of the education of all medical residencies in the United States
and assures that the highest academic standards are being reached in
training future physicians.
For five years, the program has been training family
medicine physicians for practice in the River Region. To receive full
accreditation as such a young program is quite an accomplishment. The
ACGME has high standards for accreditation that require a major commitment
of time and effort by the staff. A program must demonstrate a commitment
to excellence in order to receive full accreditation.
ACGME accreditation is vital to any residency
program. Only through training from an accredited residency program can a
physician become board certified. Without this accreditation, a
physician's ability to practice is impaired because of requirements from
insurance companies and hospital credentialing. With ACGME accreditation,
the Montgomery Family Medicine Residency Program is more attractive to
medical students which is also a plus for the community. Since one of the
program's goals is to recruit medical students that want to practice in
this area after graduation, this accreditation assures area residents that
the program is fulfilling its duties by graduating the best prepared
physicians.
