Weight Control for the Whole Family
You know that smoking and drinking alcohol can cause serious health problems. But did you know that being overweight causes health problems too? Obesity—that's being very overweight—can cause diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and many other diseases.
The only safe and effective way to control your weight is to eat sensibly and exercise. Don't use fad diets to lose weight. They don’t work in the long run. Instead, do this:
• Eat sensibly. That means lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These should make up most of your meals and snacks. Cut down on red meats. Eat more fish instead. And avoid fatty foods, fried foods, soft drinks, baked goods like cookies and cakes, and alcohol.
• Exercise often. You don't need to join a gym. All you need is 30 minutes of brisk walking every day. If you can't find 30 minutes in your day, try breaking it up. Walk for 15 minutes twice a day or 10 minutes three times a day. And whenever you can, get your body moving. Take stairs instead of the elevator. Get off the bus one stop early and walk the rest of the way. Every little bit helps you burn calories and lose weight.
Weight Matters for Kids Too
Being overweight is harmful for children as well. It can cause diabetes in kids and put them at risk for other health problems as adults. That’s why it's very important that you help your children stay at a healthy weight. Here are some steps to take:
• Keep your children active. Don't let them spend too much time watching television.
• Make sure they eat healthy foods. Fast food is not a wise replacement for a well-balanced meal.
• Don't focus on an overweight child. Make healthy eating a family affair.
• Don't use food as a reward or punishment.
When it comes to controlling your weight, set a good example for your children. It will help your whole family get healthier.
