Achieving a healthy lifestyle can be easy and yes, even fun to do. With the right information you can change the health of you and your family for the better.
Through Live Well, a healthy lifestyle program presented by Prattville Baptist Hospital, we are educating residents in Autauga and Elmore counties about three medical issues in which we are not immune: diabetes, obesity and asthma. This program offers residents a multitude of opportunities to increase their knowledge of these diseases and interactive activities to encourage lifestyle changes.
Why just diabetes, obesity and asthma?
Diabetes, obesity and asthma are impacting the lives our family, friends and neighbors. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 20 million Americans have diabetes, a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose that results from a defect in insulin production, insulin action or both. Diabetes can cause serious complications and premature death.
Obesity is a health concern effecting children, teens and adults. Being obese increases the risks of disease and other health conditions. Asthma is a disease the affects your lungs. A health initiative was imperative to help spotlight these issues in our own community.
In 2007, Prattville Baptist Hospital was the recipient of a grant from the Montgomery Area Community Wellness Coalition and Steps to a HealthierAL River Region. With the support of the grant and the coalition, Live Well was created. This program is the idea of community, church and school leaders, as well as the employees of Prattville Baptist Hospital, the Baptist Health Care Foundation and Baptist Health.
