Diabetes University
The prevalence of diabetes is on the rise in America and Baptist
Health’s Center for Diabetes and Nutrition Education is taking aim to help those in central
Alabama with diabetes reach their goal of control. A staggering 16 million
Americans suffer from the disease but only 10 million of those have been
diagnosed. With proper education and treatment, people with diabetes can
prevent life-threatening complications.
The ninth annual Diabetes
University is scheduled for Saturday, July 10 from 9 a.m. - noon at Vaughn Park Church of Christ.
This unique half-day event is the perfect opportunity for people of all
ages with diabetes to learn more about controlling their disease.
"Few diseases call for as much self-care and knowledge as diabetes,"
explains Pam Green, RD, LD, manager of the Center for Diabetes and a
Certified Diabetes Educator. "Our purpose with Diabetes University is to
help people with diabetes equip themselves with the knowledge required to
manage and control their disease and prevent complications. Diabetes is
one of the diseases that you get a vote in how it will affect you and what
the outcome will be but it requires daily attention."
During Diabetes University, participants have an
opportunity to meet face-to-face with national and local company
representatives and see first-hand the latest products and services
available for the management of diabetes. In addition, Scott Scolnick will
present "How to Eat an Elephant" and registered dietitians will be on hand
to answer basic nutrition questions.
Diabetes University is free to the public and
registration is not required. For more information, call the Baptist
Health Center for Diabetes and Nutrition Education at 213-6360.
