School of Medical Technology
Baptist Health offers a one-year hospital-based medical technology
internship. The School of Medical Technology
combines the challenges and rewards of medicine and science. At
Baptist Health, medical technologists work in five major areas of the
pathology laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology,
immunology/serology and microbiology. Professional opportunities for
medical technologists have expanded in recent years and increased
availability of positions will continue in the future. Graduates of
the School of Medical Technology are eligible to sit for the national
certification examination administered by the American Society of Clinical
Pathologists (ASCP). The school is accredited by the National Accrediting
Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Minimum
requirements for the School of Medical
Technology include:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or
university with a minimum of 16 semester (24 quarter) hours in
chemistry and 16 semester (24 quarter) hours in biology. At least one
microbiology (lecture and lab) course, one immunology course
and one college level mathematics course are required.

The School of Medical Technology is affiliated with
Auburn University and Troy University and students may
earn the bachelor's degree in medical technology under a combined
(3+1) educational program. Under this program, the student completes
three years of coursework at the university and spends the fourth year
in the School of Medical Technology internship. After successful
completion of the internship, the affiliated university awards the
bachelor's degree.

Minimum GPA for admission to the School of Medical
Technology is 1.5 on a 3.0 scale or 2.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or possess a
permanent visa (green card) or have an affiliated university-sponsored
student visa (as a 3+1 student enrolled in the University of Alabama
or Troy University).

Application deadline is August 15 for the January
class and February 15 for the July class. Application, transcripts
and letters of recommendation must be postmarked by these dates.
