Breast health should be a priority for all women. An estimated two million women in the U.S. have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. With early detection, women diagnosed with breast cancer have a greater chance of survival.
The Baptist Breast Health Center is the only facility in central Alabama with five board-certified physicians and that offers a triple reading of mammograms, which includes two physician interpretations and computer aided detection. This unique process delivers more accurate results for your peace of mind.

What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that creates an image on film. Mammograms can detect extremely small breast cancers that cannot be felt by the patient or physician.
What are my chances of getting breast cancer?
According to the American Cancer Society, there is a one in seven chance that a woman will have invasive breast cancer during her life. Although death rates from breast cancer have declined, in large part due to earlier detection and improved treatments, it is estimated more than 40,000 women will die from the disease this year.
Who needs a mammogram?
The American Cancer Society recommends women between the ages of 35 to 40 have a baseline mammogram. Annual mammograms are recommended after the age of 40.
Are mammograms safe?
In the past few years, the amount of radiation required to perform mammograms has been significantly reduced. Today, the risk of mammograms causing cancer years later is unlikely. In women over 35, it is believed the potential benefits far outweigh the risks.
How accurate are mammograms?
Mammograms are not 100 percent. At times, a breast cancer will not be identified at the time mammograms are performed. Alternatively, small unsuspected breast cancer may be detected. According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, digital mammograms were more effective in detecting cancers in women 50 and younger, perimenopausal or women with dense breasts. The technology was equally effective for women in the 40,000 participant study, that did not fall in one of the before mentioned categories. Digital imaging technology is available at the Baptist Medical Center East location, 6880 Winton Blount Boulevard.
Do mammograms replace the need for self-examination or an examination by a physician?
No. Beginning at the age of 20, women should self-examine their breasts monthly and have a physician examine their breasts every three years. After age 40, self-examination should continue monthly and physician examinations should increase to once a year.
Take action, have a mammogram.
In order for us to have your complete breast diagnostic history, bring along any mammograms or reports, if possible, you’ve had taken in the past. The most recent tests are the most important. If you have medical insurance, please bring your insurance card with you. If you wish, we’ll be happy to assist you in completing the forms. Also, please bring a written referral from your physician.
Copies of the mammogram reports are forwarded to your personal physician upon request. Copies of the mammogram report are also mailed or hand delivered to you. Personnel at the center will gladly answer questions about self-examination.
We are open Monday through Friday and offer flexible appointment scheduling to meet your needs. We also offer same day results upon request. Please call your primary care physician to discuss a having a mammogram.
