Q:  What is compliance?
A:  Compliance is a process of following the rules, laws and policies that apply to our organization to prevent, identify and correct questionable conduct and promote honest and ethical behavior in the day-to-day operations. Basically, it is doing the right thing in our responsibilities toward each other and others.  

Q:  Where is the compliance department located?
A:  The compliance department is located in the DeBoer Building on the 2nd floor next to office # 23L. The DeBoer Building is located behind Baptist Medical Center East. The address is 301 Brown Springs Road, Montgomery, AL 36117.  

Q:  What does the Compliance Department do?
A:  Baptist Health Corporate Compliance Department promotes an environment in which employees, physicians, and affiliated entities conduct business in a manner that is consistent with and demonstrates a commitment to compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Compliance Department provides: compliance and HIPAA privacy and security education, training and updates; performs audits to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations;  and serves as a resource for compliance/HIPAA privacy and security information.  

Q:  What are my responsibilities as a Baptist Health employee?
A:  Responsibilities of a Baptist Health employee include protecting the privacy and confidentiality of patient and employee information (PHI). In doing this, each employee is to only access information if needed to accomplish their job.  In addition, it is the responsibility of an employee to report any misconduct, suspected or inappropriate use or disclosure of PHI or access to a system. Additional responsibilities or an employee include:
  • Know and follow Baptist Health policies and procedures
  • Participate in and complete all required training
  • Ask questions
  • Log-off my computer when not in use and keep my password confidential  

Q:  What are the training requirements for employee of Baptist Health?
A:  Requirements for employees of Baptist health are:

  • Attend New Employee Orientation
  • Sign and return the Code of Ethical Behavior/HIPAA Basic Workforce Responsibilities Affirmation Statement
  • Complete annual Corporate Compliance and HIPAA education through Net Learning
  • Attend/complete any department specific education or training
  • Read new and/or revised policies and procedures    

Q:  How do I report misconduct, suspected misconduct or any type of compliance issue?
A:  Any employee of Baptist Health may submit a complaint regarding compliance concerns by calling the Ethics Hotline at (800) 621-5966 which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You may also contact any member of the Compliance team individually, by calling the Compliance Department at (334) 273-4442 or sending an email to corporatecompliance@baptisthealth.org. All reported concerns will be handled with confidentiality and integrity.  

Q:  Will there be retaliation if I file a complaint?
A:  Baptist Health maintains a policy of non-retaliation against any workforce member who in good faith reports a possible legal or compliance concern. You will not be fired for reporting what you honestly believed to be illegal or improper conduct. If you have been subject to retaliation those responsible will be investigated, and violators will be subject to disciplinary action.
