Program Information
The Glenn E. Vickrey School of Diagnostic Ultrasound offices and classroom are located at 2169 Normandie Drive Montgomery, Alabama. The library and classroom are equipped with modern audio-visual teaching aids, textbooks and journals, and anatomical charts and models. The scan laboratory is equipped with a GE Logic 500 ultrasound system and is used in instructional scanning sessions with students before entering the clinical setting.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS).
The School of Diagnostic Ultrasound is a certificate program designed to provide excellence in sonography education. The student receives didactic and clinical education in abdominal sonography, small parts, obstetrics and gynecology, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, and a brief introduction to vascular sonography. Classes are small to provide excellent one-on-one "hands-on" training.
Classes begin in October of each year and consist of twelve (12) months of intensive, full-time study in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students spend forty (40) hours per week attending classes, laboratory activities, and clinical instruction in patient care areas. Classes are held Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students receive approximately 650 hours of didactic instruction and approximately 1100 hours of clinical education allowing them to apply the lecture topics to practical use. The program involves study and class preparation beyond the 40-hour week. The curriculum gives students the technical, clinical, and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in this challenging field.
Upon completion of the program, a certificate is awarded, and the graduate is eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in the specialty categories of Abdomen, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation. Continuing education is required by all sonographers to maintain registration.
