Baptist Health offers a one-year hospital-based medical technology internship. Medical laboratory science combines the challenges and rewards of medicine and science. At Baptist Health, medical laboratory scienetists work in the blood bank, chemistry, hematology, serology and microbiology. Professional opportunities for medical laboratory scienetists have expanded in recent years and will continue in the future. Graduates of the School of Medical Laboratory Science are eligible to sit for national certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
Minimum requirements for the School of Medical Laboratory Science include:
- GPA 2.5 with two or more medical technology courses (listed below) or GPA 2.8 with zero to one medical technology course
- Medical technology courses are preferred, but not required: blood bank, clinical biochemistry, clinical microbiology, hematology, parasitology
- Enrollment at Auburn University or Troy University in the affiliated medical technology program or bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- 16 semester hours of biology and 16 semester of chemistry
- Microbiology (with lab) and immunology within the past five years with a grade of C or better
- Anatomy/physiology, genetics, statistics and two courses of organic and/or biochemistry within the past seven years with a grade of C or better
- Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States
Application deadline is August 15 for the January class and February 15 for the July class. Application, transcripts and letters of recommendation must be postmarked by these dates.
Affiliated medical laboratory science programs at Auburn University and Troy University
The School of Medical Laboratory Science is affiliated with Auburn University and Troy University. Under this program the student completes three years of coursework at the university and spends the fourth year in the School of Medical Laboratory Science internship. After successful completion of the internship the affiliated university awards the bachelor's degree
