Antimicrobial Stewardship

Antimicrobial resistance is a widespread problem that is not limited by patient population or geographical location. As more microorganisms mutate to overcome antimicrobials that are used to destroy them, our ability to combat these invaders decreases. Since research and development of antimicrobials is dwindling, it is imperative that our current armamentarium is used as effectively and efficiently as possible.

What is Antimicrobial Stewardship?

According to the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) article published in 2007, antimicrobial stewardship programs are developed to guide appropriate selection, dosing, route and duration of antimicrobial therapy. The primary goal of antimicrobial stewardship is to optimize clinical outcomes while minimizing unintended consequences of antimicrobial use, including toxicity, the selection of pathogenic organisms and the emergence of resistance.

Our Mission

The Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) serves in an advisory capacity to the medical and pharmacy staff to assist in the optimal selection, dosage, and duration of antimicrobial treatment. Our mission is to provide the best clinical outcome for the treatment or prevention of infection, with minimal toxicity to the patient and minimal impact on subsequent resistance.
