Baptist Health was recently awarded a $40,700 grant through the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery. Grant funding will support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baptist Medical Center South. Baptist Medical Center South and Baptist Medical Center East together create the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Baptist Health, which is one of five regional units in the state.
Grant funding will be used to purchase a new Giraffe Omnibed Infant Warmer for the NICU at Baptist South. These beds are used to keep preemies in a warm and quiet environment, and play an integral role to their development and eventual transition from the NICU setting.
In 2011, 366 babies were admitted to the NICU at Baptist South, and approximately one in six babies born in Alabama is premature. The NICUs at Baptist South and Baptist East are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment of these critically ill newborns.
The Kiwanis Club of Montgomery is a local service organization dedicated to meeting the needs of youth in the River Region. In 2012, The Kiwanis Club of Montgomery awarded approximately $275,000 to community non-profits serving the River Region. In 2009, the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery celebrated its 90th birthday.
