Baptist Health and the Montgomery Cancer Center Announce Intent to Partner

Two Leading Healthcare Providers Plan Partnership To Better Serve The Community

Montgomery, Ala. / Nov. 2, 2011 – Baptist Health and the Montgomery Cancer Center announced today the two entities have reached an agreement to form a business partnership under which the Montgomery Cancer Center, the Montgomery Breast Center and Carmichael Imaging will become wholly owned subsidiaries under the Baptist Health family of services.

“Due to the looming implications of healthcare reform and the continued instability of our nation’s Medicare program, a partnership with Baptist Health will secure Montgomery Cancer Center’s future as Central Alabama’s premiere provider of quality, comprehensive cancer services.” said Harry M. Barnes, III, MD, medical oncologist/hematologist at the center.

“This is an exciting announcement, not only for the Montgomery healthcare community, but for all of Central Alabama,” said Russell Tyner, Baptist Health’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “By bringing together these two leading healthcare organizations, we will be better positioned to serve the community’s needs into the future.”

“For more than two decades, the Montgomery Cancer Center has provided support, hope and healing to its patients,” said Stephen L. Davidson, MD, Montgomery Cancer Center medical oncologist/hematologist. “A partnership with faith-based Baptist Health is a logical step in matching our missions to serve the community through physical, emotional and spiritual deliveries of care.”

The acquisition does not include the center’s radiation-oncology practice, which will maintain its current status as an independent entity on the Montgomery Cancer Center campus as well as a valued partner in the delivery of comprehensive cancer care services.

Baptist Health is a three-hospital, faith-based system serving Central Alabama. Baptist Medical Center South is a 454-licensed-bed regional acute care referral center and the tertiary care flagship facility for Baptist Health; Baptist Medical Center East is a 150-bed acute care hospital providing a broad range of healthcare services, specializing in obstetrics and women’s services; and Prattville Baptist Hospital is an acute care, community hospital with 85 licensed beds, offering a full range of health services to residents of Autauga and Elmore counties.

For more than 20 years, Montgomery Cancer Center has been recognized as one of the largest comprehensive freestanding cancer centers in the United States. Its team of 13 physicians and health professionals provide understanding, compassionate, one-on-one attention with state-of-the-art technology and treatment. Montgomery Cancer Center also shares its main campus with its two subsidiaries Montgomery Breast Center and Carmichael Imaging.
